IA Report Backs Need for National Action on Supply Chains

Monday, 25 June 2018

The Australian Logistics Council (ALC) says today’s report from Infrastructure Australia (IA), Prioritising Reform, backs the freight logistics industry’s longstanding advocacy for a nationally-consistent approach to infrastructure development and other issues that affect supply chain safety and efficiency.

“Today’s report is a timely contribution to the continuing national conversation about how Australia can more effectively deliver the infrastructure and national regulation needed to allow Australia to meet its growing freight task,” said ALC Managing Director, Michael Kilgariff.

“As an industry leader, ALC has continually advocated the need for greater national consistency in the governance of issues that impact upon freight movement.”

“In particular, ALC has called for more effective national outcomes around land use planning, corridor protection, heavy vehicle safety, road pricing and access issues.”

“Last month, the Commonwealth Government released the Report of the Inquiry into National Freight and Supply Chain Priorities, which set out 54 priority actions to be pursued in the development of the National Freight and Supply Chain Strategy.“

“As the Inquiry noted, governments “need to take a leadership role and take immediate action” to secure greater supply chain efficiency and safety – and today’s report from IA further supports that view,” Mr Kilgariff said.

“Later this week, ALC will publicly release Laying the Foundation, the first in a series of Discussion Papers focussing on the development and implementation of the National Freight and Supply Chain Strategy.”

“The Discussion Paper is designed to continue the momentum for reform by identifying 9 policy reform actions the Commonwealth Government can pursue immediately, to prepare the ground for a more effective implementation of the Strategy once it is released in May 2019.”

“Laying the Foundation is being released as part of ALC’s annual Parliamentary Event in Canberra on 27 June, and will reiterate for parliamentarians from across the political spectrum the importance of not delaying policy reforms which the freight logistics industry needs in order to meet the nation’s rapidly growing freight task,” he concluded.
