
MARCH 2018’s container throughput at Port Botany was significantly higher than it was the same month in 2017, according to the latest available trade statistics from NSW Ports.
A total of 206,441 TEU crossed the wharves at Port Botany in March 2018, an increase of 11% on March 2017’s throughput (which was 186,475 TEU). However, March saw a decrease of 2% when compared with February’s throughput of 210,255 TEU.
March 2018’s TEU total was split roughly down the middle between exports and imports at 104,317 TEU and 102,124 TEU, respectively.
Full import boxes were up on the previous year, driven by consumables, machinery, food preparations, chemicals and timber.
Full export volumes were down 5% on the previous year, largely driven by decreases in export volumes of paper and cereals.
Turning towards exports of empty containers, they were up close to 30% in March, over the same month last year, as repositioning continues from the high season.
A total of 95 containerships called at Port Botany in March, up from 93 the same period last year, and up from 88 in February 2018.
5000-6000 TEU range 26 calls, followed by 4000-5000 TEU range with 21 calls.
